This collection of recordings features some of the classic tunes in the ceol mor repertory played by College of Piping Principal Robert Wallace. The aim has been to try to capture the freshness of expression and subtlety of nuance necessary in good piobaireachd presentation. Most of the tracks, therefore, have been done 'live' or as first takes in the recording studio. The CD features the actual performance of 'The Battle of Waterloo' which won the Northern Meeting Clasp in 1999. All proceeds from this CD go towards the College of Piping Building Fund.
This ground breaking recording came out in 1983 and has been edited and re-issued to mark this 25th Anniversary. At the time very few, if any, solo piping albums were made from live recordings. 'Chance Was a Fine Thing' was recorded at a Scottish Pipers' Association club night in the Dorchester Hotel in Glasgow. The album name is taken from the fact that College Principal Robert Wallace learned piping purely by chance when his family moved to Whiteinch in Glasgow and he came under the tutelage of the 214th Boys Brigade pipe band. On this recording Robert Wallace plays RG Hardie drones and chanter.
