The album explores the connections between celtic and bluegrass music and features Fred on Highland pipes, Reelpipes, uilleann pipes and whistle. Playing alongside Fred are some fantastic guests from Scotland and the USA - Grammy winner Tim O’Brien on guitar, mandolin and fiddle, Ron Block of Alison Krauss and Union Station on 5-string banjo, bodhran champion Martin O’Neill and the superb young guitarist, Matheu Watson.

Aberdour composer, Billy McNeil has composed and recorded a set of original pieces for Highland bagpipes. Lead and harmony bagpipes on the recording are played by Dunfermline piper, Brian Lamond, a Grade 1 Pipe Major. With flute, whistle and keyboards.

Piper Eric Rigler’s skills on the Uileann Pipes make him one of the world’s most sought after Celtic musicians. Eric played on the original soundtrack for Mel Gibson’s motion picture Braveheart and features throughout this recording with the Bill Garden Orchestra. The title track Braveheart Trilogy is a specially adapted arrangement from composer James Horner’s original film soundtrack. This album also includes many of Scotland’s best loved anthems featuring orchestral and traditional folk band arrangements, and as such it is a must for any musical collection.

'The Extraordinary Little Cough' is the result of a childhood spent touring around Scotland's highland games circuit as a solo piper, coupled with years of interest in exploring different sounds. The tracks are all based around traditional Scottish and Irish pipe tunes (with one exception) and try to use those melodies, and the stories associated with them, to create something new - using electronics, samples, found sound, voice and instruments not commonly heard in traditional music.

Pipe Major Alasdair Gillies is a piper whose name has become a legend in his own lifetime, both in his native Scotland and his adopted country, the United States.

He can win on the competition platform with a solid display of sheer skill in the traditional interpretation of the classics, ceòl beag and ceòl mòr alike. He can also charm a cèilidh audience with a demonstration of virtuosity and brilliance in the less formal type of music with its intricate and demanding technique.

Gordon Duncan, from Pitlochry in Perthshire, a piper, folk musician and composer, died in December 2005 aged 41. He was widely regarded as one of the most skilled and innovative traditional music performers and composers of modern times. While steeped in the art of traditional Highland piping, his approach to his music was always imaginative, fresh and at times radical, to the extent that his influence can be heard within an entire generation of younger musicians across Scotland and well beyond. The concert was arranged and stage-managed by Ross Ainslie and the musical director was Brian McAlpine of Session A9, both friends of Gordon. It was hosted jointly by Fiona Ritchie of Thistle And Shamrock fame and Gary West, Trust member and presenter of BBC Radio Scotland’s Pipeline. The concert was described by many as ‘a hugely emotional and yet a very happy occasion’ during the finale there wasn’t a dry eye in the house! Many of the artists were accompanied by The Concert Band, which consisted of Session A9 and other concert musicians, and not forgetting the percussion of ‘young’ Gordon Duncan. Profits from this CD will go to The Gordon Duncan Memorial Trust.
