PIPE BAND STUDIES – PART 1 (PIPING AND DRUMMING)
SYLLABUS
Candidates must hold the Level 4 Piping and Drumming Qualifications Board Certificate in Piping or Pipe Band Drumming.
Practical
Candidates must demonstrate competence on the practice chanter, or with drum sticks and practice pad, relevant practical exercises and Monotone exercises taken from the RSPBA Structured Learning or other appropriate manuals.
Theory
Candidates must be able to demonstrate a satisfactory knowledge and understanding of the following subjects:
Simple and Compound time signatures
Use and recognition of rests
Irregular Groups
Relationship between music and speech
Asymmetric Time
Corresponding time signatures
Accent, Rhythm and Syncopation
Degrees and Intervals of the Scale
Understanding Transposition
Harmony and Melody
Introduction to the Construction of the Bagpipe Scale
Introduction to Tonality in Bagpipe Music
Introduction to Pentatonic Music
Pipe Band Musicianship and Pipe Band Administration
Candidates will be expected to demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of issues associated with:
Pipe Band Musicianship
Pipe Band Leadership
