PIPE BAND STUDIES – PART 3 (PIPING AND DRUMMING)
SYLLABUS
Candidates must hold the Piping and Drumming Qualifications Board Level 4Certificate in Piping or Pipe Band Drumming; and Pipe Band Studies Parts 1 and 2 Certificates.
Practical
Candidates must demonstrate competence on the practice chanter, or with drum sticks and practice pad, relevant practical exercises and Monotone exercises taken from the RSPBA Structured Learningor other appropriate manuals.
On the Bagpipe:
Tune the instrument accurately
Play continuously, one of three sets submitted by the student comprising of March, Strathspey and Reel, each tune with a minimum of four parts, and the set will be selected by the examiner.
Play continuously, a Piobaireachd which includes the Taorluath and Crunluath variations.
Play continuously, a Medley of tunes, containing various time signatures, of 4 to 5 minutes duration.
Tune the instruments of at least three pipers to a fair degree of accuracy, in a given period of time.
Sight read accurately, an appropriate score written in simple or compound time, as may be presented by the examiner.
On the Snare Drum:
Write and play for the examiner, drum scores for a competition standard March
Strathspey and Reel, with each score having a minimum of four parts
Write, and play for the examiner, a competition standard Medley, consisting of six snare drum scores in various time signatures
Tune Snare, Bass and Tenor drums in relation to one another
Sight read accurately, an appropriate score written in simple or compound time, as may be presented by the examiner
On the Bass and Tenor Drum:
Perform in a natural manner, and with notational correctness, a suitable standard of Flourish in March, Strathspey, Reel, Slow Air, Hornpipe, and Jig rhythms, displaying well defined rhythmic pulsation, continuity of movements, and a balanced interpretation of the drum score.
Write a Bass and Tenor drum score for a competition standard March, Strathspey and Reel, with each score having a minimum of four parts.
Write a Bass and Tenor drum score for a competition standard Medley, consisting of six scores in various time signatures.
Tune accurately one Bass and two Tenor drums in relation to one another, with the Tenor drums in unison
Sight read accurately, an appropriate score written in simple or compound time, as may be presented by the examiner
