Important Statement from House of Edgar Shotts & Dykehead

Band Chairman Sandy Bell has issued the following statement:
‘As a result of the three month suspension placed on Drum Major Jim Kilpatrick MBE and the premature resignation of Pipe Major Gavin Walker, the band has decided to withdraw from all remaining competitions in the 2012 season. In light of the circumstances that the band currently finds itself in, it feels that competing at these events would be detrimental to the band and that by withdrawing it can help protect the integrity of the band, the RSPBA and the Grade One adjudicators. The band would like to stress that they will be back competing in the 2013 season. The band is extremely disappointed that they will not be able to defend their Worlds, Cowal and Champion of Champions Drumming titles and hope that band followers will support them in this decision. We would also like to wish all our fellow bandsmen the best of luck for the remainder of the 2012 season.’

The famous Shotts & Dykehead Caledonia Pipe Band will be back competing in 2013

All the best to the band and we will see you back better than ever in 2013!!

  • Ken Maltman:

Handled with the dignity and respect, that has always been the hallmark of Shotts & Dylhead.

  • Sandy:

I’m very disappointed to hear this. Someone had stated
That this years world results would have to have an asterix
Even before this statement was made. Now it is most certainly true!

  • Victor Lewis:

    Hello Sandy & Shotts,

Wishing you all the best as you move forward.
An unfortunate outcome to the situation, but looking forward to 2013.

    All the best,

    Victor

    All the best

  • Martin:

    Dignity & respect, Ken?
If Jim had displayed this in the first place then the band wouldn’t be in its current position.
You are clearly out the loop on all matters pipe band.
    Best
    Martin

  • Bill Boxall:

The comment was fine, Martin, and the association over reacted.
Adjudicators are not infallible, nor are they untouchable, no matter what they might want you to believe.

I’m reminded of the recent incident concerning the Canadian women’s soccer team at the Olympics, and the very obvious biased officiating they were forced to endure. When a couple of them made some comments immediately after the game, FIFA said there would definitely be some repercussions against the players, though to their credit, they did let them play for the bronze.

So.. when you have valid issues with the adjudicators, you suck it up? That’s not how Jim rolls.. Kudos to him.

And in the grand scheme of things, his comment *was* pretty innocuous. Someone, perhaps with an ulterior motive, really didn’t want the band playing in the World’s.

  • Robert:

    Martin.

If you think Ken Maltman is “out of the loop” then it appears you are the pot calling the kettle black. Have you any idea who this man is? If you did, you would not make such statements.

  • Martin:

Ok can you please explain who he is and what he has achieved in pipe bands? Thank you.

  • Ken Maltman:

    Hello Martin

I’m not out of the loop, and this is not the time nor place to point score. My comment was reflective of Sandy’s public statement, a statement that was placed by Shotts, on an impartial, and respected site.

Many rumours, and points of view were exchanged on the Delphi forums, non of that should be posted here.

Shotts had an executive meeting, the RSPBA situation was discussed. Various actions took place, and that is a matter for the band. The band should be respectfully be allowed to comment with out negativity directed to them or their members.

    Cheers,
    Ken

  • JOHN MACDONALD:

I now think that the whole Championship process has reached a point where performances decisions that are justifiably questioned now need to be addressed in the same way as sporting events where the performances are recorded and the footage can then be reviewed independently, and a decision for or against the judging made on that basis. The sanction here is Extreme to say the least

  • Joel Kimball:

Best to the band for next year. Slainte

  • Shotts man:

I’m sure all band players have had results go for them as well as against them over the years, its the nature of the game, a judge is just a person appointed to give their opinions on performance, how many times has Jim had a result in his favour over the years…come on…its a disgrace and he should be ashamed. Resign immediately, how can he bring the band into disrepute like this. Clearly a case of getting above yourself Jim, where are your priorities here, I was a Shotts member for a long number of years and this is a disgrace there are no excuses, a judge makes an opinion whether it agrees with your own is not relevant and like I said Jim’s had the rub his way more often than he will ever admit, with no cries of ” we didn’t paly for it, we don’t deserve it” get a grip……resign now !!!!

  • Simon:

    To “Shotts man”

To set what I am going to say in context, I am not, and never have been a Shotts and Dykehead fan. Nor do I have any connection to those involved in this debacle.

Perhaps Jim has had “the rub of the green” in the past, but I can wholeheartedly say, that on this occasion, having viewed all bands present, Jim was rightly aggrieved at the result that was commented on. To be honest, I was personally embarrassed for those involved in submitting such a result. I think submitting a result which was so glaringly different to what everyone else on the park heard, did far more to question the integrity and expertise of the person who submitted it, than anything Jim or anyone else could have said/posted. Had the Shotts corps been second, I feel that it could have been set down to bad luck and a good run by Boghall, but 6th was simply preposterous.

It is sad that things have come to this. I do genuinely believe that next years corps will be better, stronger, and more hungry…lets hope they are offered an even playing field to compete on.

  • Port Man:

S&DCPB has been a Scottish institution for decades. For Shotts not to be competing at Glasgow Green on Saturday is a national affront. It could be said that for too many years it has been the Shotts and Dykehead Drums and Pipe Band. Jim’s ego has brought down the band. He has destroyed tradition, heritage and success spanning two centuries. He should resign immediately to allow the people of Shotts to pick up the pieces of their once proud band. I hope sincerely that they can do this as I would hate to boast that I had heard the Shotts and the Muirheads in my lifetime.

  • Martin:

    Robert/Ken
I was asked if I had any idea who Ken Maltman was, I said no and asked for an explanation of who he is and what he has achieved in Pipe Bands. If this isn’t something you want to display or are maybe too embarrassed to display on here then please say.

One report claimed Jims suspension was down to ONE SINGLE COMMENT the truth is Jim posted MANY comments, Pipes and Drums, we all know are in Jims back pocket, they should hang their ‘impartial and independent’ head in shame for highly biased reporting.

Jim still hasn’t apologised, he publically chastised Alistair Aitken, this should be met with a public apology. He’s surrounded by yes ‘boys’ and foreign fake fans….

  • Leslie:

    Re: Foreign Fake Fans

    Martin,

I honestly think you should withdraw that xenofobic comment.

I take it quite personally as I squarely fit into the “foreign” category.

It was probably written in the heat of the moment and I’ll give the benefit of the doubt…..but please remove it.

    Sincerely,
    Leslie

  • Shotts man:

You know the sad truth is that Jim will never accept that he was wrong. Disagree with a decision if you like and move on, end of the day all he has done is split the band and brought disgrace to an institution. I was honoured to play for Shotts for a long time and aye on many an occasion we felt aggrieved…nature of the game, many times you end up being judged against yourself…ie you didn’t play as well as you can, where others played above themselves. What happened was they would beat you, even though you were far better than them, but ” not as good as you can play” so marked down. This was just the way of it and still is……so at the end of the day its just a judges opinion of your performance, so to vilify someone for having an opinion is a disgrace and how does Jim expect the band to get the benefit now, every little flaw will be listened for and highlighted. Jim knows he has had results on reputation before, it happens, he has disgraced the band and himself and should resign now. He has had a good run, but to become your own judge….as Burns says ” to see ourselves as others see us” do the right thing for the band and retire, with a full statement apology to the band and the association, but I know his arrogance won’t allow that and thats the problem…..shame really…great player…poor leader.
