The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders were formed by the amalgamation of two distinguished Scottish regiments - the 91st Argyllshire Highlanders and the 93rd Sutherland Highlanders. The 93rd is best known for its exploits in the Crimean War under Sir Colin Campbell. In the Battle of Balaclava in 1854 the Highlanders, alone, in a line only two deep, repulsed the charge of the massed Russian Cavalry. For the Heroic stand the 93rd acquired the unique nickname "The Thin Red Line".
