A student should reach this level after approximately two terms of weekly lessons or the equivalent in seasonal schools.
Be prepared to play five tunes on practice chanter from memory from Tutor 1 (T1), or equivalent standard, and be prepared to play on the practice chanter all the basic scales up to and including Lesson 14 in T1. At this grade the candidate is not expected to be able to sight read music but should be able to read well enough to recognise notes and movements and be able to practice a simple tune from staff after being shown it by the tutor. Answer five theory questions and two maintenance questions. Theory questions to cover basic knowledge of note values, ability to write the movements covered in T1 up to and including Lesson 14 and the ability to recognise and name treble clef, stave, bar line, leger line, double bar line, double dot repeat sign. Maintenance to cover cleaning, drying and hemping of practice chanter and adjustment of reed.
